Rokeby Museum, a 2007 Foundation grantee, received an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) Leadership in History Awards for its new exhibit, Free and Safe: The Underground Railroad in Vermont. An AASLH Leadership in History Award recognizes outstanding achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.

Free and Safe: The Underground Railroad in Vermont tells the story of Simon and Jesse, who fled slavery and found a safe haven at Rokeby, the home of the abolitionist Robinson family. Today that home, because of its importance to Underground Railroad history, is a National Historic Landmark. The 1772 Foundation’s grant supported Rokeby Museum’s Underground Railroad Education Center.
